A cytology test examines cells under a microscope to detect abnormal changes. Commonly used as cervical screening (Pap) to find precancerous or cancerous cells and HPV-related changes. Cytology also evaluates cells from body fluids or fine-needle samples to diagnose infections, inflammation, or cancers and to guide further testing and treatment.

Cytology is the branch of biology and medicine that studies cells—their structure, function, chemistry, organelles, and life cycle. It examines cell morphology, growth, division, and interactions, and is applied diagnostically to detect infections, inflammation, and cancerous changes (for example, Pap smears). Cytology overlaps with cell biology and histology and informs clinical diagnosis, research, and treatment decisions.

Cytology examines individual cells collected noninvasively or minimally invasively (smear, fine‑needle aspiration), useful for screening and rapid evaluation but lacking tissue architecture. Biopsy removes a tissue sample (punch, core, excisional), preserving architecture for histology, immunohistochemistry and definitive diagnosis, staging and treatment planning. Cytology is quicker and lower risk; biopsy is more invasive but more accurate and informative.

Yes. Cytology can miss cancer because of sampling errors, inadequate or scant cells, lesion location, early-stage or glandular abnormalities, and human interpretation variability. Sensitivity varies, so a negative cytology doesn’t fully exclude malignancy. Persistent symptoms or abnormal risk factors may warrant repeat testing, HPV testing, or direct visualization with biopsy/colposcopy for a definitive diagnosis.

Cytology (Pap) test cost varies: often free under public screening programs; private charges typically range roughly £50–£150 in the UK, ₹300–₹1,500 in India, and about $50–$200 in the US. Additional HPV testing, consultation, or lab fees may raise the price. Many clinics and community programs offer low‑cost or no‑cost options for eligible patients.

A cytology (Pap) test is usually quick and causes only mild discomfort, such as pressure, cramping, or a brief pinch during collection. Many people feel little or no pain. Light spotting afterward is common. Severe or lasting pain is uncommon; tell the clinician if you experience intense pain, heavy bleeding, or conditions that make the exam difficult. Relaxation and deep breathing can help.
