A culture (aerobic) or swab test report is a laboratory result showing which bacteria or fungi were grown from a clinical swab (throat, wound, ear, nasal, or vaginal). It names organisms, gives colony counts or growth amount, and reports antibiotic susceptibility (an antibiogram) to guide treatment. The report may include interpretation (pathogen vs. contaminant) and recommendations for antibiotic choice.

An OT swab commonly refers to an oropharyngeal (throat) swab: a sterile cotton or synthetic swab swept across the back of the throat and tonsils to collect secretions for laboratory testing of respiratory infections (e.g., COVID-19, strep). In surgical settings, "OT swab" can also mean an operating-theatre gauze swab used for packing/absorbing and is carefully counted to prevent retention.

An aerobic culture test detects and identifies bacteria that grow in the presence of oxygen from samples such as blood, urine, sputum, wound or throat swabs, or environmental samples. It diagnoses bacterial infections, identifies the causative organism and its antibiotic susceptibility, guides targeted antibiotic therapy and infection-control measures, and helps monitor treatment response and disease progression.

Culture swabs collect material from skin, wounds, throat, nose, ears, genital areas or other sites to grow microbes in the lab. They test for bacteria and fungi (e.g., Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, E. coli, Candida), identify the species, and determine antibiotic or antifungal susceptibility. Results guide diagnosis, targeted treatment, and detection of resistant organisms such as MRSA; viral detection requires different tests.

If a swab test is positive, isolate immediately and avoid contact with others. Inform close contacts and follow local public-health guidance on isolation length. Monitor symptoms; seek urgent care for shortness of breath, chest pain, confusion, or high fever. Rest, stay hydrated, and use over-the-counter medicines as advised. Follow your healthcare provider’s instructions about treatment, reporting, and when it’s safe to end isolation.

A positive culture means a microorganism was grown from your sample, indicating infection. Your clinician will identify the organism, review antibiotic sensitivity, and start or change targeted treatment. They may remove or replace devices, order repeat cultures, and implement infection-control measures (isolation if contagious). Follow prescribed medication, report worsening symptoms, and attend follow-up to confirm response and guide therapy duration.
