A CT scan of the spine provides detailed images of vertebrae and alignment, showing fractures, bone degeneration, osteophytes, spinal canal narrowing (stenosis), and bone tumors or infections. It can detect displaced fragments, spinal hardware position, and gross disc space changes, and helps assess nerve-root compression. Soft tissue and spinal cord visualization is limited compared with MRI; contrast-enhanced CT improves detection of infection or tumor.

A CT scan itself (diagnostic X‑ray doses) rarely causes a skin rash. Risk is higher with prior contrast allergy or asthma; premedication or alternative imaging can reduce risk.

A CT scan for a toddler is a quick, painless imaging test that uses X‑rays and computer processing to produce detailed cross‑sectional pictures of the head, chest, abdomen or bones. It’s used when urgent, detailed information is needed (for head injury, suspected internal bleeding, complex infections or fractures). Young children may need sedation or immobilization; doctors weigh benefits against radiation exposure and minimize dose.

MRI is generally preferred for spine problems involving discs, nerves, soft tissues and the spinal cord because it shows soft-tissue detail without radiation. CT is superior for bone detail, fractures, complex bony anatomy or when MRI is contraindicated; it’s faster but involves ionizing radiation. The optimal test depends on the clinical question, urgency, and patient factors (e.g., implants, claustrophobia).

A full spine CT scan’s image acquisition typically takes about 5–15 minutes. Including registration, positioning and staff checks, expect 15–30 minutes for a non-contrast study. If IV contrast is needed, add time for injection, delayed imaging and observation — often extending the appointment to around 45–60 minutes (sometimes up to 90 minutes with complex prep).
