A CT urogram with contrast is a specialized CT scan using intravenous iodinated contrast to image the kidneys, ureters and bladder. Multiphase images (including non-contrast and delayed excretory phases) highlight stones, tumors, strictures and causes of hematuria or obstruction. It assesses urinary tract anatomy and function; you may need blood tests to check kidney function and for contrast allergy beforehand.

CT urography is generally not painful. The scan itself is painless, though you may feel brief discomfort from IV cannulation and a warm flushing sensation when contrast is injected. Lying still, breath‑holding and a full bladder may cause temporary discomfort; serious pain or allergic reactions are rare.

After a CT scan with iodinated contrast, drink plenty of fluids to help flush the dye — typically an extra 1–2 liters (about 4–8 glasses) over the next 24 hours. Continue good hydration for 24–48 hours. If you have kidney disease, heart failure, or fluid restrictions, follow your clinician’s instructions. Contact your provider if you have very little urine, swelling, or breathlessness.
