CT Scan Upper Abdomen, in Visit Clinic

A CT scan of the upper abdomen visualizes the liver, gallbladder and bile ducts, pancreas, spleen, adrenal glands, upper kidneys, stomach, duodenum, major blood vessels (aorta, IVC), nearby lymph nodes, abdominal wall and spine. It detects masses, cysts, inflammation, infection or abscesses, stones, hemorrhage, fluid collections, free air and vascular problems, helping diagnose trauma, tumors and acute abdominal pain.

An upper abdomen scan images organs above the belly button—liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, upper kidneys and major vessels—to evaluate pain, swelling, jaundice, abnormal liver tests, suspected gallstones, pancreatitis, masses or infection, trauma, or unexplained weight loss. It detects stones, inflammation, tumors, fluid collections and aneurysms, and helps guide biopsies or treatment planning.

Before an upper abdominal CT scan: follow fasting instructions (usually no solid food for four to six hours; sips of water allowed). You may be asked to drink oral contrast and receive IV contrast; arrive early for any blood tests if kidney function or diabetes/medication (e.g., metformin) status must be checked. Remove jewelry, wear loose clothing, and tell staff about pregnancy, allergies, or kidney disease.

A diagnostic CT scan’s ionizing radiation at usual doses generally does not cause a skin rash. However, iodinated contrast used in many CTs can trigger allergic or delayed hypersensitivity reactions (rash, hives, itching) in some people. Rarely, contrast extravasation or equipment-related issues can cause local skin injury. If you develop rash, swelling, itching, or breathing problems after a CT, seek medical care promptly.

Abdominal CT can detect primary and metastatic cancers in the liver (including metastases), pancreas, kidneys, adrenal glands, spleen, stomach, small bowel and colon/rectum, as well as pelvic organs (ovaries, uterus). It also shows lymph node involvement, peritoneal carcinomatosis and metastatic spread to the abdominal wall. Some small or early tumors may be missed, requiring additional tests.

If a CT shows a serious or life‑threatening finding, radiologists give an immediate “stat” read and notify the treating team—often within minutes to a few hours. In emergency settings (stroke, hemorrhage, major trauma) interpretation and action are essentially real‑time. The formal written report is usually finalized within 24 hours, and critical results are typically relayed by phone or electronic alert.
