A wrist CT scan is usually very quick. The actual scan takes seconds to a few minutes, while overall appointment time—checking in, positioning and instructions—typically ranges from 10 to 30 minutes. If an intravenous contrast agent is required, allow extra time for injection and brief observation, often extending the visit by about 20–60 minutes.

No — CT scans cannot directly detect pain. They image bones, organs and tissues and can reveal structural causes that explain pain (fractures, tumors, abscesses, inflammation), but pain itself is diagnosed clinically. CT may miss soft‑tissue or neuropathic causes; MRI, ultrasound or nerve tests can be more useful in some cases. Imaging is used selectively when clinical features or red flags warrant it.

For a CT scan you usually can wear your clothes, but you'll be asked to remove jewelry, eyeglasses, hairpins and anything with metal (zippers, underwire). You may be given a hospital gown if needed. Tell staff about implants (pacemaker, surgical clips) or removable dental work. Follow specific instructions from the imaging department for your scan.

A CT scan is usually painless and quick, though some people find lying still on the hard table or the scanner noise slightly uncomfortable. Intravenous contrast can cause a warm flushing sensation, metallic taste, brief injection-site discomfort, or rare allergic reactions. Claustrophobic or anxious patients may feel uneasy. Technologists can help with positioning, breath-hold instructions, and comfort measures.

For wrist imaging, CT is superior for detailed bone evaluation—complex fractures, fragment alignment, and surgical planning—while MRI is better for soft tissues: ligaments, tendons, cartilage, occult fractures, and bone marrow edema. CT is faster but uses ionizing radiation; MRI avoids radiation but is slower and may be contraindicated with some implants. The best choice depends on the suspected injury and clinical context.
