A CT scan of the left hip is a specialized X‑ray study that uses multiple cross‑sectional images and computer reconstruction to visualize the hip joint, surrounding bones, cartilage, soft tissues and blood vessels. It helps detect fractures, arthritis, infections, tumours and structural abnormalities. The test is quick, noninvasive, may use contrast for better detail, exposes the patient to a small amount of radiation, and is interpreted by a radiologist.

The initial imaging for hip problems is usually a plain X‑ray to detect fractures, arthritis, bone alignment and some deformities. For persistent pain or suspected soft‑tissue injury, occult fracture, labral tear or early osteonecrosis, MRI is the best choice. CT is superior for complex fracture detail and surgical planning; ultrasound can assess effusion and guide injections. Choice depends on clinical suspicion.

For a hip CT, the patient lies supine on the CT table with legs extended and toes pointing upward; the affected hip is centered in the scanner. Feet may be gently internally rotated (about 10–15°) to align the femoral neck. Arms are usually raised or placed out of the scan field, and the patient is asked to lie still and hold their breath briefly during imaging.

For a hip CT, wear loose, comfortable clothing you can easily remove; avoid metal zippers, buttons, underwire bras, jewelry or piercings, belts, and hair clips. You may be asked to change into a hospital gown. Tell staff about implants, recent surgeries, or if you might be pregnant. Leave valuables at home and bring comfortable shoes.

A standard hip CT appointment usually takes about 15–45 minutes overall. The actual scan is quick—typically 5–10 minutes—but registration, positioning and image reconstruction add time. If IV contrast is needed, allow an extra 15–30 minutes for injection and brief monitoring. Complex protocols, extra views or facility delays can extend the visit.

CT images are displayed by radiologic convention as if you’re standing at the patient’s feet looking toward the head. That means the left side of the image corresponds to the patient’s right side, and the right side of the image corresponds to the patient’s left. Scans also include R/L markers—always verify those and the clinical notes if unsure.
