A PNS CT scan is a computed tomography examination of the paranasal sinuses that produces detailed cross-sectional images of sinus cavities, nasal passages and surrounding bone. It helps diagnose sinusitis, chronic infections, nasal polyps, congenital anatomy variations, tumors and facial fractures, and is used for surgical planning. The test is fast and noninvasive but involves low-dose ionizing radiation; contrast is rarely required.

Cost varies by country and setting. In India a CT PNS typically ranges about ₹800–₹5,000 depending on centre and whether contrast is used. In the UK it’s free on the NHS; privately it’s roughly £120–£400. In the US typical out‑of‑pocket prices are about $300–$1,500 (higher in hospital radiology departments). Actual cost depends on location, facility, and insurance/coverage.

A CT PNS is usually very quick: the scanner captures images in seconds to a few minutes. Including patient positioning, instruction, and paperwork the full appointment typically lasts 10–30 minutes. If IV contrast is needed, allow extra time for cannulation and imaging—often 30–60 minutes total. Expect minimal waiting; the technologist will explain specifics when you arrive.

The PNS test (paranasal sinuses X‑ray) images the sinus cavities to evaluate sinus disease and related problems. It helps detect sinusitis (mucosal thickening, air‑fluid levels), polyps, bone fractures, foreign bodies or chronic changes. Clinicians use it to investigate facial pain, nasal blockage, persistent nasal discharge or preoperative assessment; CT is preferred for detailed evaluation when needed.

A PNS CT scan is generally painless. The procedure is quick and noninvasive; you lie still while images are taken. You may feel mild discomfort from staying in one position, pressure from the headrest, or anxiety/claustrophobia. If contrast dye is used, there can be a brief warm sensation or minor sting at the injection site. Serious pain or complications are uncommon.

A CT scan of the paranasal sinuses can detect masses, bone erosion, calcifications and the extent of a lesion, so it often identifies tumors or suspicious growths. However, it cannot definitively distinguish benign from malignant disease and is less sensitive than MRI for soft‑tissue, intracranial/orbital extension and perineural spread. Tissue biopsy is required for diagnosis; contrast CT improves characterization.
