A CT scan of the nasopharynx is a specialized X‑ray that produces detailed cross‑sectional images of the upper throat behind the nose. It evaluates anatomy and detects infections, tumors, adenoids, sinus disease, bone erosion, or obstruction. The quick, painless scan may use contrast dye to better show soft tissues and is used for diagnosis, staging, and treatment planning, with small radiation exposure.

A CT scan can detect nasal and paranasal sinus tumors by showing masses, bony destruction, and the disease’s extent, and it helps plan biopsies or surgery. CT cannot alone confirm malignancy—tissue biopsy with histology is required. MRI better defines soft-tissue, intracranial or orbital spread, while PET/CT can assess metabolic activity and possible metastases when cancer is suspected.

An ENT may request a CT scan to evaluate sinus disease, detect complications (abscess, bone erosion), assess facial or skull fractures, locate tumors or foreign bodies, and examine middle/inner ear and mastoid bone (cholesteatoma, mastoiditis). It’s used for surgical planning and to define anatomical variations that affect treatment choice. CT shows bone detail better than MRI.

Contrast-enhanced MRI is the imaging modality of choice for the nasopharynx because it gives superior soft-tissue contrast and delineates tumor extent, perineural spread, and skull-base involvement. Contrast CT is complementary for assessing bony erosion and calcification. Flexible nasoendoscopy provides direct visualization and enables targeted biopsy when mucosal lesions are suspected; choice depends on the clinical question.

Early signs of nasopharynx problems include persistent nasal congestion or blockage, frequent or blood‑tinged nasal discharge or nosebleeds, reduced sense of smell, unilateral ear symptoms (fullness, hearing loss, tinnitus, recurrent middle‑ear fluid), persistent sore throat or hoarseness, and unexplained neck lumps (swollen lymph nodes). Seek medical evaluation if symptoms persist or worsen.

It helps detect infections or abscesses, tumors, enlarged lymph nodes, trauma, airway narrowing, and spread of cancer. It's used for diagnosis, staging, surgical planning, and guiding biopsies.
