A CT scan of the ankle typically takes 5–10 minutes of actual scanning. Including registration, changing, positioning and quick image checks, expect about 15–30 minutes at the imaging center. If intravenous contrast is needed or extra positioning and review are required, the appointment can be longer. You’ll be asked to remain still for best image quality.

Yes. CT scans visualize joint bones and alignment very well, detecting fractures, bone lesions, and joint space narrowing. CT is less sensitive than MRI for cartilage, ligaments, tendons and other soft-tissue injuries, but CT arthrography with contrast can improve assessment. CT is often used when detailed bone anatomy or surgical planning is needed; it involves ionizing radiation.

It’s also used for screening in high‑risk patients.

Serious CT findings are treated as urgent: radiologists provide a preliminary read and directly notify the treating team immediately—often within minutes to an hour—especially in emergency or inpatient settings. Formal radiology reports usually follow within a few hours. Less urgent studies can take up to 24 hours or longer depending on workflow and staffing.
