A CT KUB is a noninvasive computed tomography scan of the kidneys, ureters and bladder used to detect kidney stones, urinary tract obstruction, masses, infections and anatomical abnormalities. Non-contrast CT is commonly used for stones; contrast may be added for suspected tumors or infection. It provides rapid, detailed cross-sectional images but involves ionizing radiation and sometimes contrast-related risks; brief preparation may be required.

A CT KUB is generally not painful. The scan is noninvasive; you lie on a table while images are taken. You may feel minor discomfort from lying still, a brief sting if intravenous contrast is used, or pressure if asked to hold a full bladder. Anxiety or claustrophobia can cause discomfort. CT‑KUB (usually non‑contrast) is designed to detect stones and urinary tract anatomy. Contrast-enhanced CT or ultrasound are preferred when active renal infection or abscess is suspected; correlate with clinical findings, urinalysis and cultures.
