A head CT shows bone and soft‑tissue anatomy of the skull and brain, detecting skull fractures, acute bleeding (intracranial hemorrhage), ischemic changes in early stroke, tumors, brain swelling, hydrocephalus and ventricular size, calcifications, sinus disease and foreign bodies. It helps assess trauma, sudden neurological deficits, severe headache, altered consciousness or seizures and guides emergency treatment and surgical planning.

A non-contrast head CT scan usually takes about 5–10 minutes of scanner time; the whole appointment including registration and positioning is typically 15–30 minutes. If contrast dye is needed, add time for IV placement, injection and brief observation—plan about 30–60 minutes total. Emergency cases are often faster; you’ll receive specific instructions when you arrive.

In India, a non-contrast head CT often costs about ₹1,000–₹5,000 (contrast higher). In the UK private CTs generally run about £150–£700 (publicly funded scans are free when referred). In the US, out‑of‑pocket prices vary widely—roughly $300–$3,000 or more—depending on location, facility, contrast use and emergency status. A head CT is generally safe when medically indicated. It uses ionizing radiation, so there’s a small long-term cancer risk—higher for children and with repeated scans. Contrast dye can rarely cause allergic reactions or affect kidney function. Clinicians weigh benefits versus risks, use the lowest effective dose, and consider alternatives (such as MRI) for pregnant patients or when radiation should be avoided.

No—CT scans are excellent for acute bleeding, skull fractures, large strokes, some tumors and hydrocephalus, but they cannot detect all brain problems. Small or early ischemic strokes, subtle tumors, infections, inflammation, white‑matter disease, and certain structural or metabolic conditions may be missed. MRI and other tests (contrast studies, angiography, lumbar puncture) are often needed for definitive diagnosis.

An abnormal CT prompts clinical correlation and comparison with prior imaging, followed by targeted follow‑up: additional imaging (MRI, ultrasound, PET) or dedicated CT phases, laboratory tests, and referral to the appropriate specialist. If a mass or suspicious lesion is present, image‑guided biopsy may be recommended. Urgent intervention or admission is required for acute findings (e.g., hemorrhage, major vascular injury).
