CT-guided aspiration is a minimally invasive procedure using CT imaging to precisely guide a needle into an abscess, fluid collection, or suspicious lesion to drain fluid or obtain a sample. Performed under local anaesthetic (sometimes with sedation), the radiologist monitors needle placement, withdraws fluid or tissue, and may leave a drain. Risks include bleeding, infection and injury to nearby structures; brief observation follows.

A chest CT can detect the effects of aspiration — for example, dependent‑lobe consolidation, ground‑glass opacities, airway wall thickening or lung abscess — and help differentiate aspiration pneumonia from other causes. However, CT cannot directly visualize the swallowing event or real‑time aspiration; dynamic tests (videofluoroscopic swallow study or FEES) are required to confirm aspiration episodes.

A CT-guided biopsy is usually not severely painful. Local anaesthetic numbs the skin and tissue, so you typically feel pressure, tugging or brief sharp pinches when the needle advances or tissue is sampled. Some discomfort, bruising or aching can occur for a few days. Sedation may be offered for anxiety. Contact your care team for heavy bleeding, severe pain, fever or worsening symptoms.
