A CT scan of the wrist is a noninvasive imaging test that uses X-rays and computer processing to produce detailed cross-sectional images of wrist bones and joints. A wrist CT scan usually takes about 5–15 minutes for the imaging itself. Including check‑in, positioning and any contrast preparation (rare for wrist), the total appointment typically lasts 15–30 minutes. If extra views or delayed images are needed, it can extend to 30–45 minutes. You’ll be asked to remove jewelry and remain still during the short scan.

Initial evaluation of wrist pain usually starts with plain X-rays to detect fractures or arthritis. Choice depends on the suspected problem, presence of metal or MRI contraindications, urgency, and local availability; clinicians select the modality that answers the diagnostic question.

A CT scan itself is generally painless. You lie on a table that moves through the scanner; remaining still may cause discomfort or anxiety. If contrast dye is injected you may feel brief stinging, a warm flushing sensation, or mild pressure at the IV site. Serious pain or allergic reactions are rare—inform staff about allergies, kidney issues, or pregnancy before the scan.
