The cervical screening test collects cells from the cervix with a small brush during a brief pelvic exam. The sample is tested primarily for high‑risk human papillomavirus (HPV); if HPV is found, the same sample is examined for abnormal cervical cells (cytology). HPV‑negative results return to routine recall; HPV‑positive results may lead to closer monitoring or colposcopy.

A Pap smear is a cytology test where cervical cells are collected and examined for abnormal or precancerous changes. Cervical screening refers to the wider preventive programme: it now typically screens first for high‑risk HPV infection and uses cytology only as follow‑up when needed, plus recall and management pathways. The sample collection method is the same.

Five warning signs of cervical cancer: 1) Abnormal vaginal bleeding — after sex, between periods, or after menopause. 2) Unusual watery, bloody, or foul-smelling discharge. 3) Persistent pelvic pain or pain during intercourse. 4) Painful or difficult urination, or blood in the urine. 5) Unexplained lower‑back or leg pain/swelling, weight loss, or fatigue—see a doctor if any occur.

Before a cervical screening, book when you’re not menstruating. Avoid intercourse, douching, tampons or vaginal medications for 24–48 hours beforehand. Don’t use vaginal creams on the day. Empty your bladder and wear comfortable clothing. Bring ID and your pregnancy or health history, including previous abnormal results, and any questions. Relax during the test — it’s usually quick and you can ask for support or a chaperone.

If cervical screening is positive, you’ll be invited for further testing—often a repeat smear or referral to colposcopy, where the cervix is examined and biopsies may be taken. Most abnormalities are mild and treatable with procedures such as excision or ablation; only a small proportion become cancerous. You’ll receive a clear treatment plan and regular follow-up to ensure the issue is resolved.

A cervical screening (smear) is usually not painful but often feels uncomfortable—pressure, brief cramping or pinching for a few seconds. Some people experience more pain, especially with vaginismus, pelvic pain conditions, or past trauma. It takes only a few minutes. Communicate with your clinician about pain, ask for a smaller speculum, a slower approach, or support; breathing and relaxation can help.
