BERA (Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry) is an objective, non‑invasive test that measures electrical activity along the auditory nerve and brainstem in response to sound. It's used to detect hearing loss in newborns and difficult-to-test patients, localize auditory pathway or nerve lesions, evaluate tinnitus or retrocochlear pathology, and monitor auditory function during surgery. Small earphones deliver clicks while electrodes record brain responses.

The BERA (brainstem evoked response) test is safe for children. It is non‑invasive, painless, and uses electrodes and earphones to measure hearing nerve and brainstem responses. No radiation is involved. Infants may be tested while naturally asleep; sometimes mild sedation is used, which carries small risks and requires monitoring. Rare discomfort from electrodes or earphones is possible.

BERA (auditory brainstem response) tests evaluate hearing and brainstem auditory pathways; they do not diagnose autism. While BERA can help rule out hearing loss or auditory pathway issues that might mimic social/communication problems, autism diagnosis relies on developmental and behavioral assessments by specialists (e.g., pediatricians, psychologists, speech therapists) using standardized evaluation tools. Abnormal BERA alone does not confirm autism.

If a BERA (brainstem auditory evoked response) test fails, it suggests possible peripheral or neural hearing impairment and requires prompt follow-up. Repeat testing, otoacoustic emissions, behavioral audiometry, ENT/audiology referral, and imaging (MRI) may be recommended to identify cochlear versus brainstem causes. For infants, early hearing-device evaluation, speech/developmental monitoring and multidisciplinary intervention (audiology, otology, pediatric) are important to optimize outcomes.

After a BERA (ABR) test, review the results with your audiologist or ENT to plan next steps. Normal results but persistent concerns may prompt behavioral audiometry, otoacoustic emissions, or repeat ABR. Abnormal findings typically lead to diagnostic audiology, imaging (MRI/CT) to check for retrocochlear causes, and early intervention (hearing aids, cochlear implant evaluation, speech therapy) with regular follow-up.

Costs vary widely by country and provider. In India a BERA test generally costs about ₹800–₹3,000. In the UK it’s usually free on the NHS; private clinics charge roughly £150–£500. In the USA out‑of‑pocket prices commonly range $200–$1,000 depending on facility, sedation, neonatal monitoring and audiologist fees.
