Acacia (including species now placed in Vachellia and Senegalia) is commonly called babul or babool in India (Hindi: बबूल) and kikar in northern regions. Other local names include shami or khejri for related species. Common names vary by region and species; these trees are widely used for timber, tannins, fodder and traditional remedies.

Acacia (gum arabic) is a soluble dietary fiber and prebiotic that feeds beneficial gut bacteria, supports regular bowel movements, and may help lower LDL cholesterol and improve blood‑glucose control. It's widely used as a natural emulsifier and stabilizer in foods and pharmaceuticals, and is generally well tolerated, gentle on the digestive tract, and may soothe minor throat or oral irritation.

Acacia is not exclusively a desert plant. Many species are adapted to arid and semi‑arid environments and are common in deserts and savannas, with drought traits like deep roots and reduced leaf surfaces. However, other Acacia species inhabit woodlands, grasslands and wetter regions; habitat depends on the species and region.

Acacia is a good furniture wood: dense, hard, durable, and attractive with a rich grain. It’s naturally water-resistant and tolerates outdoor use when sealed. Downsides: it’s heavy and can split, warp, or scratch if poorly seasoned or left unprotected, so regular oiling or varnish is recommended. Sustainable options exist—check certification. Overall, a strong, affordable hardwood choice for many furniture types.

Acacia (gum acacia or gum arabic) is a natural exudate from Acacia species. It’s commonly known as gum arabic rather than “Indian gum.” Some Acacia species grow in India and yield similar gums, but the label “Indian gum” can mean other products (for example gum karaya or edible gond). Thus acacia is related to, but not identical with, all so‑called Indian gums.

The acacia tree supplies gum arabic used as a food and pharmaceutical stabilizer, emulsifier and demulcent; traditional medicine uses include treating coughs, sore throats, diarrhea and wound healing due to anti-inflammatory and astringent properties. Acacia wood provides timber and fuel; its leaves and pods serve as animal fodder. It's also used for tannins, soil erosion control, and in cosmetics and dental products.
