Yttrium Therapy

Yttrium-90, a radioactive isotope, is used in targeted cancer therapies — radioembolization (Y-90 microspheres) for liver tumors, radioimmunotherapy (labelled antibodies) for lymphoma, and brachytherapy. Non‑radioactive yttrium compounds are used in medical ceramics and dental or orthopaedic implants (yttria‑stabilized zirconia). Yttrium radioisotopes also help palliative bone pain relief and investigational radiopharmaceuticals.

Yttrium-90, a radioactive isotope, is used in cancer therapy as targeted internal radiotherapy. Y-90–loaded microspheres are injected into liver arteries (radioembolization/SIRT) to deliver localized beta radiation to hepatocellular carcinoma or liver metastases. Y-90 also labels monoclonal antibodies (radioimmunotherapy) for some non-Hodgkin lymphomas. Its short-range beta emissions concentrate tumor dose while limiting exposure to surrounding tissue.

Yttrium‑90 radioembolization costs vary widely by country, device and setting. Typical private/uninsured prices range roughly US$20,000–60,000 per treatment in the United States; in India about ₹150,000–500,000 (approx. US$2,000–6,500). In countries with public systems (for example the UK) it is often provided through national health services, while private care can cost tens of thousands locally. Confirm with your center and insurer.

Y-90 radioembolization is often effective for controlling liver tumours: many patients experience tumour shrinkage or stable disease, sometimes allowing surgery or transplant. Response rates vary by cancer type but partial responses occur in a substantial minority; overall it can prolong survival and improve symptoms by months to years for selected patients. Outcomes depend on tumor burden, liver function and prior treatments.

Yttrium is not an essential nutrient. Inhalation of yttrium dust or oxides—mainly in industrial settings—can irritate eyes, skin and the respiratory tract; chronic exposure has been linked to lung inflammation, granulomas and pulmonary fibrosis. Animal studies suggest possible liver and kidney effects. Human data are limited, so occupational controls and protective measures are recommended to minimize exposure.

Yttrium‑90 radioembolization commonly causes fatigue, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, fever and decreased appetite, and transient elevations in liver enzymes. Less common but serious complications include radiation‑induced liver disease, jaundice, biliary injury, gastrointestinal ulceration from non‑target microsphere delivery, and radiation pneumonitis if lung shunting occurs. Symptoms usually appear days to weeks after treatment.
