X Ray Thoracolumbar Spine

A thoracolumbar spine X-ray is an imaging test using low‑dose radiation to produce pictures of the thoracic and lumbar vertebrae. It checks for fractures, deformities (such as scoliosis), degenerative changes, infection, and spinal alignment after injury. Often done following trauma or for persistent back pain, it’s quick, noninvasive, and provides initial assessment; CT or MRI may be needed for more detail.

The thoracolumbar spine (where the thoracic meets lumbar vertebrae) can be serious depending on the issue. It can suggest disc space changes but cannot directly image discs, nerves, spinal cord, or soft tissues—further evaluation with MRI or CT is often needed for those concerns.

Treatment begins with clinical assessment and imaging to classify the injury. Stable pain or minor compression is managed conservatively: analgesics, activity modification, thoracolumbar brace, and early physiotherapy focusing on core strengthening. Unstable fractures or neurological deficits require urgent surgical consultation for decompression and stabilization. Address bone health (calcium, vitamin D, osteoporosis therapy) and arrange follow-up and rehabilitation.
