X Ray Soft Tissue Neck AP View

A soft‑tissue neck X‑ray (lateral and AP views) visualizes the airway and surrounding soft tissues — pharynx, epiglottis, larynx and trachea — plus prevertebral tissues and cervical spine alignment. It detects airway narrowing, foreign bodies, soft‑tissue swelling, retropharyngeal abscess or epiglottitis signs, masses or calcifications, and fractures or deformities that may affect breathing, swallowing or neck trauma assessment.

Positioning for a soft-tissue neck X-ray uses a lateral erect view with the patient upright, head in neutral or slight extension and shoulders depressed. Center the cassette at the level of C4 (thyroid cartilage), directing the central ray perpendicular to the film. Collimate to include from the skull base to the thoracic inlet. An AP/PA view may be taken with the cassette anteriorly and CR at C4.

A standard neck (cervical spine) X-ray uses three views: lateral — shows vertebral alignment, disc spaces, and soft tissues; anteroposterior (AP) — assesses vertebral bodies and overall alignment; and open‑mouth (odontoid) — visualizes C1–C2 (atlas/axis) and the odontoid process. Together they help detect fractures, dislocations, degenerative changes, or infection and instability.

Patient stands or lies supine with back against the image receptor for an AP cervical spine. Midline aligned to the cassette, shoulders relaxed; chin slightly extended to keep the mandible clear. Center the central ray at C4 (level of the lower thyroid cartilage) and angle 15–20° cephalad for the AP axial cervical view. Collimate to include the base of the skull to the top of the shoulders.

Soft-tissue neck X-ray costs vary by country and setting. In the UK it’s free on the NHS but about £40–£150 privately; in India typical private charges are roughly ₹150–₹700; in the US out-of-pocket fees commonly range $50–$400. Yes, X-rays can detect bone-related neck problems (fractures, misalignment, arthritis, bone spurs, instability) and may show loss of disc height or congenital changes. However, X-rays cannot directly visualize soft tissues such as discs, nerves, ligaments, or the spinal cord. For suspected disc herniation, nerve compression, infection, or spinal cord problems, MRI (or CT in some cases) is usually required.
