X Ray Skull Lateral View

A lateral skull X-ray is a side-view radiograph of the head that visualizes cranial bones, sinuses, sella turcica and mastoid regions. It helps detect skull fractures, bone lesions, sinus disease and some developmental or degenerative changes. The test is quick with low radiation but limited for soft-tissue detail; CT has largely replaced it for acute trauma. Minimal preparation is needed.

The lateral view of the skull is a side-on radiographic or anatomical perspective showing the cranial vault and facial skeleton in profile. It displays bones such as the frontal, parietal, temporal, occipital, zygomatic, maxilla, and mandible, plus sutures, the orbit, nasal bones, external acoustic meatus, and mastoid process. Clinically it helps evaluate fractures, sinus disease, and developmental abnormalities.

The lateral position of the skull is the side-view orientation used in clinical examination and radiology. With the head turned to profile, it displays cranial bones (frontal, parietal, temporal, occipital), facial bones, orbit, mastoid region, zygomatic arch and mandible. It aids evaluation of fractures, sinus disease and intracranial contours and is commonly used in skull X‑rays and CT imaging.

Skull lateral radiograph is indicated for suspected skull fracture after head trauma (including depressed fractures), detection of radiopaque foreign bodies, evaluation of paranasal sinuses and mastoid air cells, assessment of cranial sutures/craniosynostosis in children, and to demonstrate intracranial air (pneumocephalus), calcified lesions or bone abnormalities when CT is unavailable or as an adjunct.

A lateral view on an X-ray is a side-to-side image taken with the X-ray beam directed through the body from one side to the other. It provides depth and spatial relationships not visible on front/back views, helping localize lesions, evaluate bone alignment, and reveal air-fluid levels. Lateral views commonly complement PA/AP films for chest, spine, skull, and extremity assessments.

In the lateral view, infant skulls show open fontanelles and wide sutures with a proportionally large cranial vault and small face. During childhood and adolescence sutures close, paranasal and mastoid air cells enlarge, and the mandible and teeth develop. Adult skulls show fused sutures; with aging bone thins and becomes more porous, teeth and alveolar bone resorb, reducing lower facial height and altering mandibular contour.
