X Ray Sinogram

A sinogram is the raw projection data set from an X‑ray or CT scan, plotted with detector position along one axis and projection angle along the other. Each internal point produces a sinusoidal trace across angles. Sinograms visualize how attenuation varies with angle and are the input for tomographic reconstruction algorithms (for example filtered back‑projection) that compute cross‑sectional images.

Sinogram (fistulography) is indicated to evaluate a cutaneous sinus or fistula causing chronic or recurrent discharge. It delineates the tract’s course, length, branching and any communication with underlying structures (e.g., cavities, joints, bone or hollow organs), helps identify the infection source or foreign body, and guides surgical planning or drainage when other imaging is inconclusive.

Costs for an X‑ray sinogram vary widely by country and setting. Public healthcare systems often cover it at no direct charge. In India, standalone centers commonly charge roughly ₹300–2,000. In private US clinics or imaging centers, expect about $200–700 (higher with facility fees or contrast). Always confirm with your local provider or insurer for exact pricing.

Beforehand, provide consent and inform the team about contrast allergy or pregnancy. The area is cleaned and numbed; a small cannula is placed into the sinus opening. Water‑soluble contrast is gently injected while X‑ray/fluoroscopy or CT images are taken to map the tract. The procedure takes 15–30 minutes. Afterwards the site is dressed, monitored briefly for reactions, and simple wound care is advised.

A sinogram is usually not severely painful. A contrast dye is injected into a sinus tract after local skin cleaning; you may feel brief stinging from local anaesthetic, pressure or mild aching during dye injection and probe manipulation. Discomfort is generally short-lived; some soreness or tenderness can persist a day or two. Serious pain or complications are uncommon—tell staff if you have significant pain or fever.

The three main types of X‑ray machines are: 1) Plain radiography (general X‑ray) — produces static images of bones and chest; 2) Fluoroscopy — provides real‑time moving images for procedures like catheter placement or gastrointestinal studies; 3) Computed Tomography (CT) — uses rotating X‑ray beams and detectors to create cross‑sectional, detailed 3D images of organs and tissues.
