X Ray Shoulder Lateral and AP View

AP (anteroposterior) view: X-ray beam passes from front to back, producing a frontal image; commonly used when patients cannot stand, but can magnify structures like the heart. Lateral view: beam passes from one side to the other, producing a side-profile image that shows depth and overlap, helping localize pathology and assess relationships between anterior and posterior structures.

An AP (anteroposterior) shoulder X‑ray projects the X‑ray beam from front to back, producing a frontal image of the clavicle, acromion, glenohumeral joint and proximal humerus. It helps detect fractures, dislocations, arthritis and joint‑space abnormalities. Images may be taken upright or supine, with the arm in neutral, external or internal rotation to better visualize tuberosities and alignment.

Three standard shoulder X‑ray views: anteroposterior (AP) — evaluates joint space, glenoid and proximal humerus; axillary view — shows the glenohumeral relationship to identify dislocations; scapular Y (lateral) view — assesses humeral head position relative to the scapula and acromion for fractures or displacement. AP may be obtained in internal and external rotation to profile tuberosities. Together they detect fractures, dislocations, and degenerative change.

A lateral shoulder X‑ray is a side‑view radiograph of the shoulder taken to show the humeral head, glenoid, acromion, clavicle and scapula in profile. It often uses a scapular‑Y or transthoracic lateral projection and is performed sitting, standing or supine. It helps detect fractures, dislocations, joint space narrowing and other abnormalities, and is usually requested alongside an AP view.
