A thigh X-ray is called a femur radiograph (femoral X-ray). It typically includes anteroposterior (AP) and lateral views to assess the femur and adjacent hip or knee joints. Depending on the suspected problem, imaging may include the entire femur plus neighbouring joints for full assessment.

AP (anteroposterior) and Lat (lateral) describe X‑ray projection directions. AP means the beam travels from the patient’s front to back (commonly used for supine or bedside films), often causing slight magnification. Lateral means the beam passes from one side of the body to the other, giving a side view that shows depth. Used together, they localize findings and improve diagnostic accuracy.

A right hip-thigh X-ray is a plain radiographic exam of the right hip joint and femur to visualize bone structure. It detects fractures, dislocations, arthritis changes, infections, or bone tumors. Images (usually AP and lateral views) are taken while you lie or stand; the test is quick, generally painless, uses low-dose radiation, and helps guide treatment decisions like casting, surgery, or physiotherapy.

Patient supine on the table, affected leg fully extended in a true AP position with the patella facing upward and femoral epicondyles parallel to the image receptor. Center the image receptor on the distal femur so the knee joint is included. Direct the central ray perpendicular to the mid‑distal femur. Collimate to include the distal femur and the joint above and below; obtain a lateral if needed.

Common X‑ray types include: 1) Chest X‑ray — evaluates lungs, heart and mediastinum; 2) Dental X‑ray — images teeth and jaw for cavities, abscesses and alignment; 3) Skeletal (bone) X‑ray — assesses fractures, joint problems and bone lesions. Specialized X‑ray techniques (e.g., mammography, fluoroscopy) are used for breast screening and real‑time imaging.
