X Ray Right Scaphoid Lateral view

Scaphoid view is a dedicated wrist radiographic projection—PA with the wrist in maximal ulnar deviation and the X‑ray beam angled proximally (usually 10–20°). This projects the scaphoid free from overlapping carpal bones, improving detection of waist and proximal-pole fractures. It’s used when a scaphoid fracture is suspected, often alongside standard PA, lateral and oblique wrist views.

The appropriate x-ray series for a suspected scaphoid fracture is a dedicated scaphoid series — PA with ulnar deviation (scaphoid view), lateral and oblique views. Early fractures can be radiographically occult; if clinical suspicion persists, immobilize the wrist and repeat x-rays in 10 to 14 days or obtain early MRI or CT for definitive diagnosis and to assess fracture displacement.

The lateral view of a hand X‑ray displays the wrist, metacarpals and phalanges in profile, providing a side-on image that shows bone alignment, joint relationships, and displacement. It is used to detect fractures, dislocations, foreign bodies and soft‑tissue swelling. Positioning requires the forearm flexed at 90° with the hand placed true lateral (digits superimposed); the thumb may be imaged separately if needed.

The right scaphoid is the boat‑shaped carpal bone on the thumb (radial) side of the right wrist. It links the forearm to the hand and enables wrist movement. Scaphoid fractures are common after falls onto an outstretched hand, causing anatomical snuffbox pain, swelling, and weak grip. Diagnosis uses X‑ray, CT, or MRI; treatment ranges from casting to surgical fixation depending on displacement and blood supply.

A scaphoid X‑ray is done at any age when a scaphoid fracture is suspected after a fall onto an outstretched hand. Fractures are most common in adolescents and young adults (about 15–30 years), but can occur in children and older adults. If initial X‑rays are negative but clinical suspicion remains, immobilize and repeat imaging or obtain MRI/CT after 10–14 days.

The scaphoid is a small wrist bone on the thumb side that stabilizes the carpal bones and transmits forces between hand and forearm. It enables wrist motion and strong grip. Scaphoid fractures are common after falls and heal poorly because its blood supply is limited, risking nonunion or avascular necrosis. Early recognition and appropriate treatment are essential to maintain wrist function and prevent chronic pain.
