X Ray Right Middle Finger Lateral View

Place the finger in a true lateral with the affected digit turned so its radial or ulnar side rests against the image receptor; other fingers are flexed away. Keep the finger straight (or slightly flexed for comfort) so joints are superimposed. Center the x‑ray beam at the PIP joint and include the distal phalanx through the metacarpal head. Immobilize to prevent rotation.

Lateral view in X‑ray is a side‑on radiograph obtained with the X‑ray beam passing from one side of the body to the other and the detector on the opposite side. It complements frontal (AP/PA) views by showing depth and spatial relationships, revealing anterior/posterior structures, alignment, and occult fractures. Commonly used for spine, chest, and joint assessment to localize lesions and assess extent of pathology.

In anatomical position (arms at the sides, palms facing forward), "lateral" means toward the outer side, away from the midline. The thumb (first digit) is the most lateral finger, with the index finger next most lateral. The little (fifth) finger lies medially. Lateral corresponds to the radial (thumb) side of the forearm and hand.

Finger X‑rays require at least two views at right angles, but typically three views are obtained: AP (or PA), oblique, and lateral. These visualize the entire phalanx and adjacent joint surfaces to detect fractures, displacements, and joint involvement. Additional views or imaging of neighboring digits/hand may be added for complex injuries or surgical planning.

A lateral X‑ray is a side view and can be either left or right depending on which side of the body is placed against the image detector. For chest X‑rays the standard is a left lateral (left side against the detector) to reduce cardiac magnification, but films should always carry a left/right marker to confirm which side was imaged.

The lateral position (side-lying) is when a person rests on either side with head aligned, knees slightly flexed and a pillow between legs. It’s used to improve breathing, reduce aspiration risk (recovery position), relieve pressure on bony prominences, aid drainage, and enhance comfort—especially for unconscious patients, pregnant people, or those at risk of pressure ulcers.
