X Ray Right Leg AP & Lateral view, in Vasai Virar

AP (anteroposterior) view is an X‑ray taken with the beam directed from the front to the back of the body; it’s used when a standard posterior–anterior film isn’t possible (e.g., supine patients) and can slightly magnify anterior structures. Lateral view is taken with the beam passing from one side to the other, giving a side profile that localizes lesions, shows depth, and complements AP/PA films.

An AP lateral refers to two complementary X‑ray projections: anteroposterior (AP) and lateral. AP images are taken front-to-back, often when patients cannot stand; lateral views are taken from the side at 90°, providing depth and localization. Together they improve detection of fractures, joint alignment, and chest or lung pathology, aiding clinical assessment by showing structures in two planes.

Typical prices vary: in India about ₹200–₹1,000; in the UK an AP/lateral knee X‑ray is free under the NHS but private clinics charge roughly £40–£120; in the US out‑of‑pocket costs commonly range $50–$250. Hospital settings, extra views or urgent care can raise fees, and insurance often covers diagnostic X‑rays—confirm exact pricing with your imaging center.

On a lateral leg X‑ray the patient lies on the affected side with the leg on the image receptor. The knee is flexed about 45° so the femoral condyles are superimposed; the ankle remains at right angles. The central ray is perpendicular to the mid‑shaft of the tibia/fibula. Include both knee and ankle joints when fracture is suspected and shield gonads.

AP (anteroposterior) and lateral are two separate radiographic views. AP is a single frontal projection obtained front-to-back, while lateral is a single side projection. Together they provide two orthogonal images that improve detection and localization of thoracic pathology (e.g., effusion, consolidation). AP views may magnify the heart compared with PA films, so technique affects interpretation.

Lateral in an X‑ray refers to a side‑view projection where the X‑ray beam passes from one side of the body to the other, producing a profile image. It complements frontal (AP/PA) views by separating overlapping structures, showing depth and relationships—e.g., spine alignment, lung lesions, joint spaces—and aiding localization of abnormalities. The patient is positioned so the side of interest faces the detector.
