X Ray Right Knee AP and Lateral View

AP (anteroposterior) and lateral are standard knee X‑ray views. AP is a frontal projection showing distal femur, proximal tibia and joint space to assess alignment, arthritis, joint‑space narrowing and fractures. Lateral is a side view emphasizing the patellofemoral joint, suprapatellar recess, joint effusion, fat pads and posterior bone contours, useful for detecting patellar or femoral condyle fractures and effusions.

AP (anteroposterior) view: X‑ray beam travels from the patient’s front (anterior) to back (posterior), commonly used when patients can’t stand (supine or semi‑erect); it may slightly magnify the heart. Lateral view: beam passes side‑to‑side, producing a profile image that complements the AP view by showing depth, localizing lesions, and distinguishing anterior from posterior structures.

A knee lateral view X‑ray is a side‑view radiograph of the knee showing the femur, tibia, patella and joint space with femoral condyles superimposed. It’s used to detect fractures, dislocations, osteoarthritis, joint effusion, loose bodies and to assess alignment or pre/post‑operative hardware. The image is taken with the knee flexed about 20–30° (standing or lying). Radiation exposure is low.

An AP lateral refers to two standard X‑ray projections: anteroposterior (AP) and lateral. The AP view sends the X‑ray beam front-to-back, showing frontal anatomy, while the lateral view projects side-to-side to display depth and profile. Together they provide orthogonal images that improve detection of fractures, dislocations, alignment issues and foreign bodies by reducing anatomical overlap.

The lateral part of the knee is the outer side of the joint (away from the midline). Key lateral structures include the lateral femoral condyle, lateral tibial plateau, the lateral meniscus, and the lateral (fibular) collateral ligament. The iliotibial band also runs along the outside of the knee. Injuries on the lateral side typically affect these structures.
