X Ray Right Index Finger Lateral View

Patient seated at the table with the forearm supported and the hand resting on the detector. Place the finger of interest in a true lateral (finger plane perpendicular to the detector), with the distal phalanx through the distal metacarpal included. Center the x‑ray beam at the PIP joint. Move or curl adjacent fingers out of the beam and use a sponge or tape to prevent rotation.

Lateral to the index finger is the thumb — specifically the radial (thumb) side. In the standard anatomical position (palms facing forward), “lateral” means away from the body’s midline, so the thumb lies on the lateral aspect of the hand. The radial border of the index finger faces the thumb, while its ulnar (medial) border faces the middle finger.

Finger X‑rays are usually obtained in three views: anteroposterior (AP or PA), lateral, and oblique to fully visualize bone alignment, joint spaces, and fractures. Two views may suffice for obvious injuries, but three views are standard to detect subtle fractures and assess displacement. Additional targeted views can be taken if more detail is needed for complex injuries or preoperative planning.

A lateral view is an X-ray taken from the side so the X-ray beam passes laterally through the body. It shows the profile of bones and soft tissues, helping assess depth, alignment, fractures, fluid levels and soft‑tissue changes not visible on frontal views. Lateral projections complement AP or PA images for the chest, skull, spine and many extremity studies.

“Lateral” means a side view — either left or right. For chest X‑rays the lateral is typically a left lateral (patient’s left side against the detector) to reduce heart magnification, though right lateral can be used when needed. Always check the image’s side marker or report for the actual orientation, since the term alone doesn’t guarantee left or right.

The lateral position means lying on one’s side (left or right). Clinically it’s used to improve breathing and drainage, reduce aspiration risk, relieve pressure on the spine and sacrum, and protect skin integrity. The left lateral position is often recommended in pregnancy to improve circulation. It’s commonly used for patient comfort, examinations, procedures, and pressure ulcer prevention.
