X Ray Right Hnd Finger Lateral View

For a lateral finger X‑ray, seat the patient with the forearm on the table and place the affected finger in true lateral on the image receptor (pad/sponge under hand). Ensure the palmar surface is perpendicular to the receptor so the finger’s condyles are superimposed. Other digits are flexed out of the way. Center the central ray perpendicular to the PIP joint and collimate to include fingertip to distal metacarpal.

In the standard anatomical position (palms forward), “lateral” means farther from the midline. The thumb (pollex) is the most lateral digit of the hand; the little finger (pinky) is the most medial. Relative to the middle finger, the index finger is lateral and the ring finger is medial — lateral/medial always refer to distance from the body’s midline.

Position the patient seated or standing with the elbow flexed 90°. Place the hand in true lateral with the ulnar (medial) border against the image receptor; fingers extended and stacked so phalanges are superimposed. Slightly abduct the thumb if a separate view is needed. Direct the X-ray beam perpendicular to the second metacarpophalangeal joint (mid-hand), collimate to the hand, and immobilize.

Standard finger radiography uses three views: posteroanterior (PA) or AP, oblique, and lateral. These three projections assess alignment, fractures, and joint involvement. In some cases (complex injury or surgical planning) additional specialized views or repeat imaging may be requested. The thumb often requires dedicated AP and lateral projections, but other digits are usually imaged with the three-view approach.

A lateral view is an X-ray taken from the side, with the beam passing laterally through the body to produce a profile image. It shows depth and front-to-back relationships of structures, helping localize lesions, evaluate bone or joint alignment, and clarify findings from frontal films. Commonly used for chest, spine, skull and extremities; the patient stands or lies with the examined side against the detector.

Lateral position is a side-lying body posture in which a person rests on their left or right side. It’s used to maintain airway patency and reduce aspiration risk (recovery position), relieve pressure, improve comfort, and in pregnancy (left lateral) to enhance uteroplacental circulation. It also aids drainage of secretions and is commonly used in nursing, anesthesia and rehabilitation.
