AP (anteroposterior) view is an X‑ray taken with the beam entering the front and exiting the back of the body, producing a frontal image often used when repositioning is limited. Lateral view is taken from the side, showing depth and sagittal relationships. Together they localize injuries, assess alignment, and separate overlapping structures for clearer diagnosis.

A both heel lateral view X‑ray is a radiographic exam taking lateral (side) images of both calcanei to compare heels. It evaluates fractures, bone alignment, joint spaces, heel spurs, and surrounding soft‑tissue swelling. Performed with each foot in a true lateral position, it helps detect acute injuries, chronic conditions, infection, or post‑operative changes and guides treatment decisions.

A "right heel LAT" is shorthand for a lateral radiograph (side‑view X‑ray) of the right heel (calcaneus). It shows bone alignment, fractures, heel spurs, joint spaces and soft‑tissue shadows. Clinicians order it to assess trauma, suspected calcaneal fractures, chronic heel pain or infection. A radiologist interprets the image; additional views or CT may be needed for complex injuries.

Lateral position for a calcaneus X‑ray: the patient lies on their side with the affected heel against the image receptor, knee flexed and the foot dorsiflexed to about 90° so the plantar surface is vertical. The calcaneus is placed in a true lateral, and the central X‑ray beam is centered on the mid‑calcaneus to show the tuberosity, sustentaculum tali and subtalar joint.
