X Ray Right Hand Pa View

The PA (posteroanterior) view is a standard chest X‑ray projection where the X‑ray beam travels from the patient’s back (posterior) to the front (anterior) onto the detector. The patient stands facing the detector with the chest against it. This positioning reduces heart magnification, improves lung and mediastinal detail, and lessens soft‑tissue overlap compared with an AP view.

The standard hand X‑ray includes a PA (posteroanterior) view with the palm flat on the detector to visualize phalanges, metacarpals and carpals; an oblique (about 45°) to better show joint spaces and subtle fractures; and a lateral view to assess alignment, displacement and soft‑tissue profile. Additional specialized views (AP, scaphoid) are used when specific injury or detail is needed.

For a PA hand radiograph, center the x‑ray beam at the third metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint. Position the hand palm down with fingers extended or slightly flexed, long axis aligned to the image receptor. Ensure the central ray is perpendicular to the receptor, collimate to the hand, include the distal forearm, and immobilize to avoid motion blur.

A standard hand X‑ray typically includes three views: posteroanterior (PA), oblique, and lateral. These provide orthogonal perspectives to assess bones, joints, and soft tissues for fractures, dislocations, or degenerative changes. Additional targeted views (e.g., scaphoid, stress, or individual finger views) may be requested depending on clinical suspicion or trauma. Your clinician will decide what’s needed.

AP (anteroposterior) is a front‑to‑back projection with the palm up (supinated); used when the patient can’t pronate, it causes slightly more magnification and can foreshorten joint spaces. PA (posteroanterior) is a back‑to‑front projection with the palm down (pronated); it’s the standard hand view, producing less magnification and better visualization of joint spaces.

A PA (posteroanterior) X‑ray is a chest radiograph taken with the X‑ray beam passing from the back (posterior) to the front (anterior) while the patient faces the image receptor. It’s the standard upright view for assessing lungs, heart size, pleura and mediastinum, reducing heart magnification and improving detail. The patient takes a deep inspiration; radiation exposure is low.
