X Ray Right Hand PA View and Oblique View

The oblique view of the hand is an X‑ray taken with the hand rotated about 45° from the flat (PA) position, separating the metacarpals and phalanges to reduce overlap. It shows joint spaces, metacarpal shafts and periarticular structures more clearly than a PA view, aiding detection of fractures, dislocations, small bony fragments and foreign bodies. Fingers are slightly spread and the thumb moved away from the palm.

An oblique view in X‑ray is an angled projection taken between the frontal (AP/PA) and lateral planes. The patient or X‑ray beam is rotated to create a diagonal perspective that separates overlapping structures, improving visualization of bones, joints, spine, ribs, or subtle fractures and alignment. Oblique images complement standard views to reveal pathology hidden on straight frontal or lateral radiographs.

Place the hand palm down on the image receptor with the wrist and forearm supported. Rotate the hand laterally (externally) about 45°—use a 45° sponge—so the fingers are separated and parallel to the receptor. Extend digits slightly to avoid overlap. Direct the x‑ray beam perpendicular to the third MCP joint and include from the fingertips to the distal radius.

The PA (posteroanterior) view is a chest X‑ray taken with the patient facing the detector so the X‑ray beam passes from back to front. It reduces cardiac magnification and more accurately portrays heart size and lung fields than an AP view. It’s usually performed upright for optimal lung expansion and for assessment of air‑fluid levels.
