The lateral view of a hand X‑ray is a side‑on projection obtained with the hand positioned so the digits are superimposed, producing a true lateral image. It displays the profile of phalanges, metacarpals and carpals, allowing assessment of fractures, dislocations, joint alignment, subluxation, foreign bodies and soft‑tissue swelling. It complements frontal views to fully evaluate hand injuries and pathology.

A lateral view X‑ray is a side‑on radiograph taken at right angles to the frontal (AP/PA) view. It shows depth and relationships of structures by projecting them laterally, reducing overlap seen on frontal films. Commonly used for chest, spine, skull and joints, it helps localize lesions, assess alignment and detect hidden pathology. The patient is positioned with the examined side against the detector.

For routine hand X‑rays, position the hand flat on the detector with the palm down (PA), fingers extended and slightly spread, wrist and forearm aligned with the cassette and elbow at 90°. Ensure no rotation and that the entire hand plus distal wrist is included. Additional views: true lateral (thumb up, fingers together) and 45° oblique as required.

Right lateral X‑ray positioning places the patient with their right side against the image receptor. For an upright lateral chest, the patient stands with shoulders stacked, arms raised, and the central ray perpendicular at the level of T7; take on full inspiration. For a right lateral decubitus, the patient lies on the right side with a horizontal beam to show air–fluid levels or small pleural effusions.

A right lateral view means the patient’s right side is placed against the image receptor (or the patient lies on their right side in a decubitus study); a left lateral view places the left side against the receptor or down. The chosen side brings that anatomy closer to the detector, changing magnification and revealing gravity‑dependent fluid or air to help localize pathology.

A right-hand X-ray is ordered to check for fractures, dislocations, bone infections, arthritis, growth‑plate injuries, foreign bodies, or congenital abnormalities. It helps assess joint alignment, detect bone changes causing pain or swelling, guide treatment decisions, and monitor healing or implant position after intervention. The test is quick and noninvasive, providing clear images of bones and joint spaces to direct appropriate care.
