X Ray Right Forearm Lateral View

The lateral forearm X‑ray is taken with the elbow flexed 90° and the forearm positioned true lateral (thumb up), so the radius and ulna are superimposed. The humerus, elbow and wrist lie in the same plane and the central beam is perpendicular and centered at the mid‑forearm. This view assesses bone alignment, occult fractures and joint dislocation.

A lateral view in X‑ray is a side-on radiographic projection obtained with the X‑ray beam passing from one lateral body side to the other. It shows depth and spatial relationships of tissues and bones, reducing overlap seen on frontal (AP/PA) images. Commonly used for chest, spine, skull and limbs, it helps localize lesions, assess alignment and evaluate air or fluid levels.

The lateral forearm refers to the outer side of the forearm (the radial or thumb side) when the body is in anatomical position. It extends from the lateral aspect of the elbow to the wrist and overlies the radius bone. Clinically, it’s where muscles like brachioradialis lie and where the superficial branch of the radial nerve provides sensory supply.

An X‑ray of the forearm visualizes the radius and ulna to detect fractures, bone alignment or displacement, joint dislocations, and growth‑plate injuries. It can show signs of infection, bone tumors or cysts, degenerative changes and healing callus after injury. It may reveal radiopaque foreign bodies and soft‑tissue swelling, though detailed soft‑tissue assessment often requires further imaging (e.g., MRI).

A lateral X‑ray is a side view of the body, not inherently left or right. It becomes a left or right lateral depending on which side of the patient is placed against the image receptor (and marked by the radiographer). Proper side markers identify orientation; without them, you cannot reliably determine left versus right from the image alone.

Forearm radiography is performed by trained radiographers. Obtain AP (anteroposterior) and lateral views that include wrist and elbow. Position the patient seated or supine with the forearm on the detector; AP with palm up and elbow extended, lateral with elbow flexed 90° and thumb up. Center the beam mid-forearm, collimate to include joints, use shielding and proper exposure, and have images reviewed by a radiologist.
