AP (anteroposterior) view: the X‑ray beam travels from front to back, often obtained supine or as a portable upright film — useful when patients can’t stand but can magnify the heart and mediastinum. Lateral view: the beam passes from one side to the other, producing a side‑on image that separates overlapping structures, helping localize lesions and assess retrosternal/retrocardiac spaces.

An ankle AP and lateral X-ray are two standard radiographic views—anteroposterior (front-to-back) and lateral (side)—used to image the ankle bones and joint. They assess fractures, dislocations, joint space, alignment (including the ankle mortise) and degenerative changes. The two views together provide comprehensive evaluation after trauma or persistent pain. The test is quick, noninvasive, with low radiation exposure.

Position the patient supine or seated with the affected ankle on its lateral side. Flex the knee about 45 degrees and place the ankle in a true lateral so tibia and fibula are superimposed and malleoli align. Keep the foot neutral (dorsiflexed), center the X‑ray beam at the medial malleolus perpendicular to the film, and include distal tibia, fibula and hindfoot. Remove jewelry and use gonadal shielding.

A lateral ankle is obtained with the limb in a true lateral: patient lies on the affected side (or supine with the leg rolled) with the ankle dorsiflexed so the foot is at 90° to the leg. The medial and lateral malleoli and talar domes should be superimposed. The central ray is perpendicular to the ankle joint (around the medial malleolus), including distal tibia/fibula, talus, and calcaneus.

"AP" stands for anteroposterior. In an AP X‑ray the X‑ray beam enters the body from the front (anterior) and exits at the back (posterior). It’s commonly used when patients cannot stand (supine or sitting). Compared with PA views, AP can magnify and distort cardiac and mediastinal structures and is generally considered less optimal for chest assessment.

In X‑rays, "lateral" means a side view: the X‑ray beam travels from one side of the body to the other and the patient is positioned on their side. This projection shows front‑to‑back depth and the spatial relationship of structures, helping localize abnormalities or clarify findings seen on front (AP/PA) films. Commonly used for chest, spine, and skull imaging.
