An AP (anteroposterior) hip view is a frontal X‑ray taken with the patient supine and the X‑ray beam directed front‑to‑back through the pelvis, centered on the femoral heads. Legs are often internally rotated about 15° to profile the femoral necks. It visualizes the acetabulum, femoral head and neck, and proximal femur to detect fractures, dislocations, degenerative change, or joint‑space abnormalities.

Center the AP pelvis X‑ray with the patient supine on the midline at the level of the femoral heads — approximately the midpoint between the anterior superior iliac spines (ASIS) and the pubic symphysis. Direct the central ray perpendicular to the IR, include both hips and iliac crests, and internally rotate the legs about 15° to place the femoral necks parallel to the detector.
