X Ray Pelvis Both Hips AP View

A pelvis X-ray with both hips is a standard radiographic exam that images the pelvis and both hip joints, usually in an anteroposterior (AP) view. It evaluates fractures, dislocations, arthritis, bone lesions, developmental abnormalities and pre/postoperative alignment. The test is quick, noninvasive, requires minimal preparation, may include additional angled views, and uses low-dose ionising radiation—pregnancy should be reported beforehand.

An AP view of both hips is an anteroposterior X-ray taken with the pelvis centered and both legs internally rotated about 15–20° to profile the femoral necks. The central ray is aimed at the pelvic midline at the level of the femoral heads. The image shows both acetabula, proximal femora and hip joint spaces, used to assess fractures, arthritis, deformity and dislocation.

The pelvis AP view is an anteroposterior radiograph taken with the patient supine or standing and the x‑ray beam centered over the midline at the level of the pubic symphysis. It images the pelvis, sacrum, both hip joints and proximal femora, often with slight internal rotation of the legs to profile the femoral necks. It detects fractures, dislocations, degenerative disease and aids surgical planning.

For an AP pelvis radiograph, center the central ray on the midsagittal plane at the level of the femoral heads—approximately the midpoint between the anterior superior iliac spines (ASIS) and the pubic symphysis. Direct the beam perpendicular to the table. Internally rotate both lower limbs about 15° to profile the femoral necks and include iliac crests to proximal femora on the exposure.

Pelvic X‑ray costs vary by country and setting. In the UK it's free on the NHS for eligible patients; private clinics charge roughly £50–£200. In the US typical out‑of‑pocket or cash prices range from about $100–$1,000 depending on facility, views and reporting. In India private centres commonly charge roughly ₹200–₹2,000. Costs rise with additional views, radiologist reporting and emergency rates.

A pelvis X‑ray itself is not painful. You may feel discomfort from lying on the hard table, changing positions, or from the existing injury being imaged. Technicians will help position you and may use supports; tell staff if you are pregnant or in severe pain. The scan is quick and noninvasive, uses low‑dose radiation, and usually doesn’t require injections or cause pain.
