X Ray Nose Lateral View

The lateral view of the nasal bone is a lateral radiographic projection showing the profile of the nasal bones, nasal dorsum and adjacent bony structures. Performed with the head in true lateral position and the x‑ray beam centered over the nasal bridge, it helps detect fractures, displacement, step deformities and assess nasal contour. It also shows the nasal septal shadow and frontal processes of the maxilla.

For suspected nasal-bone injury, a dedicated nasal bone X‑ray—usually a lateral nasal bone view, sometimes with an occipitomental (Waters) or PA Caldwell view—is used to detect simple fractures. For sinus symptoms, lateral sinus and Waters views are common. For complex trauma, septal injury, or surgical planning, CT scan of the facial bones is preferred due to greater detail.

The optimal radiographic assessment uses a dedicated lateral nasal bone view combined with an occipitomental (Waters') view. The lateral view is most sensitive for detecting nasal bone fractures and displacement, while the Waters view helps evaluate facial contours and possible septal involvement. CT is preferred for complex midface trauma or suspected septal hematoma.

A lateral view X‑ray is a side-to-side radiographic projection where the X‑ray beam passes from one side of the body to the other and the detector captures a profile image. It complements frontal (AP/PA) views by showing depth, anterior–posterior relationships and reducing overlap of structures. Lateral views are commonly used for spine, chest, skull and joint imaging to localize lesions and assess alignment.

On a lateral radiographic view of the paranasal sinuses you can visualize the frontal sinuses, ethmoid air cells, sphenoid sinus, and maxillary sinuses. The lateral projection shows anterior and posterior ethmoid cells superimposed, outlines the frontal and maxillary sinus cavities, and displays the sphenoid sinus posteriorly—useful for detecting fluid levels, mucosal thickening, or air–fluid interfaces.

Lateral to the nasal area are the cheeks (maxillary/zygomatic region) and the lateral nasal wall, which contains the inferior and middle nasal conchae. Deep to the cheek lie the paired maxillary sinuses. The nasolacrimal drainage apparatus also runs near the lateral nasal wall toward the lacrimal sac. Together these structures form the side boundaries of the nasal cavity.
