X Ray Neck Lateral View

A lateral neck X-ray is a side-view radiograph that images the airway, soft tissues and cervical spine. It helps evaluate throat or breathing problems—such as foreign bodies, epiglottitis, croup, retropharyngeal abscess or prevertebral swelling—and guides emergency care. The test is quick, needs minimal preparation, uses low-dose ionizing radiation, and is interpreted by a radiologist to aid diagnosis and treatment.

The three standard views of a neck (cervical spine) X‑ray are: lateral — shows alignment and vertebral bodies; anteroposterior (AP) — assesses vertebral bodies and disc spaces; and open‑mouth (odontoid) — visualizes C1–C2 and the odontoid process. These three views help detect fractures, dislocations, and degenerative changes.

A lateral X-ray is a side-view radiograph obtained by directing the X-ray beam from one side of the body to the other, producing a profile image. It demonstrates depth and spatial relationships of bones and organs, helping detect fractures, misalignment, lung pathology, or spinal problems. Lateral views complement frontal (AP/PA) images to improve localization and diagnostic accuracy. Patient positioning varies by body part (standing, sitting, or supine).

The lateral cervical X‑ray position: patient upright in a true lateral with the midsagittal plane perpendicular to the image receptor, shoulders relaxed and depressed, and the head neutral or slightly extended so the mandible does not obscure C1–C2. Center C4 to the cassette, use a vertical film, keep arms at the sides, and instruct full inspiration to lower the shoulders for better C7 visualization.

The lateral neck refers to the side region of the neck, extending from the lower jaw to the clavicle and bounded anteriorly by the sternocleidomastoid muscle and posteriorly by the trapezius. It contains muscles, lymph nodes, blood vessels, nerves (including the spinal accessory nerve) and lymphatic tissue; swelling, lumps, pain or infections there commonly prompt medical assessment.

A neck X‑ray can reveal bone fractures, dislocations and alignment problems of the cervical spine; degenerative changes such as osteoarthritis and reduced disc height; cervical spondylosis, bone spurs and instability; infections like osteomyelitis, bony tumors or metastases; foreign bodies, calcifications and prevertebral soft‑tissue swelling (suggesting abscess or airway compromise). It also checks surgical hardware position.
