X Ray Nasopharynx Lateral

An X-ray nasopharynx lateral view is a side radiograph showing the nasopharyngeal soft tissues, airway and adenoids. It assesses adenoid hypertrophy, airway obstruction, nasopharyngeal masses and the eustachian tube region, often in children with snoring, mouth breathing or recurrent ear infections. The patient stands in profile; exposure is brief and uses low-dose radiation. No special preparation is usually needed.

The lateral wall of the nasopharynx is formed by mucosa overlying the pharyngobasilar fascia and superior pharyngeal constrictor and contains the pharyngeal (auditory) tube opening framed by the torus tubarius. Posterior to it lies the pharyngeal recess (Rosenmüller). The salpingopharyngeal and salpingopalatine folds descend from the torus; this region helps equalize middle-ear pressure and drain the nasopharynx.

A nasopharynx X-ray is a plain radiograph of the upper throat behind the nose used to assess anatomy and detect problems such as enlarged adenoids, infections, sinus disease, masses or tumors, foreign bodies, and skull-base trauma. It’s commonly used for persistent nasal obstruction, recurrent ear infections or suspected nasopharyngeal mass, but has limited sensitivity compared with nasoendoscopy or CT.

On a lateral neck X‑ray, adenoids appear as a soft‑tissue mass in the nasopharynx posterior to the nasal choanae. Hypertrophy produces a convex posterior bulge that narrows the nasopharyngeal air column and can obstruct choanae. Radiologists use measurements (e.g., adenoid‑to‑nasopharynx ratio) and reduced posterior airway space to grade enlargement and correlate with symptoms.

A lateral view in X‑ray is a side-to-side radiographic projection where the X‑ray beam passes through the body from one lateral side to the opposite, producing a profile image perpendicular to the frontal (AP/PA) view. It shows depth and spatial relationships of structures, helping localize lesions, assess alignment, and detect fractures, effusions, or pathology not visible on frontal images.

Symptoms of adenoid problems include persistent nasal blockage or runny nose, chronic mouth breathing, noisy breathing and snoring, restless sleep or pauses in breathing (sleep-disordered breathing), recurrent ear infections or fluid in the middle ear causing hearing loss, frequent sinus infections, a nasal or hyponasal speech quality, sore throat and difficulty swallowing. These signs are most common in young children.
