X Ray MCU

MCU (micturating cystourethrogram), also called VCUG, is an X‑ray exam of the bladder and urethra performed while the patient urinates. A catheter fills the bladder with contrast, and X‑rays are taken during filling and voiding to detect vesicoureteral reflux, bladder outlet obstruction, urethral anatomy and recurrent urinary tract abnormalities. Risks include radiation exposure and infection.

MCU (voiding cystourethrogram) costs in India typically range from about ₹800 to ₹4,000 at standalone diagnostic centres. In private hospitals or specialty centres the price may rise to ₹4,000–₹8,000. Final cost depends on city, facility, fluoroscopy use, catheterisation and radiologist fees; government hospitals and subsidised clinics are usually markedly cheaper.

RGU–MCU is combined contrast X-ray imaging of the urethra and bladder during injection and voiding. RGU outlines the anterior and posterior urethra to detect strictures, trauma, leaks or fistulae; MCU evaluates bladder filling and voiding to identify vesicoureteral reflux, bladder outlet obstruction, posterior urethral valves and congenital anomalies. It’s used for suspected urethral injury, recurrent UTIs, retention or unexplained urinary symptoms.

A micturating cystourethrogram (MCU) involves passing a small catheter into the urethra, filling the bladder with contrast, and taking X‑rays while you void. Adults usually experience discomfort—catheter insertion, bladder fullness, cramping or burning when urinating—but not severe pain. Local anesthetic gel and gentle technique reduce distress. Burning or light blood in urine is common and short‑lived; seek care for fever, severe pain, or heavy bleeding.

A MCU (micturating cystourethrogram) is not routine for every UTI. It’s usually recommended for recurrent febrile UTIs, abnormal renal ultrasound (hydronephrosis), suspected vesicoureteric reflux, or atypical urinary tract anatomy. Because it requires catheterization and radiation, alternatives like renal ultrasound or a DMSA scan may be tried first. Decide with your pediatrician or urologist based on symptoms and prior imaging.
