X Ray Mastoid Per View

The X‑ray view of the mastoid is a dedicated mastoid radiograph (mastoid series), most commonly obtained as Schüller (lateral oblique) and Stenvers (posterior oblique) projections. These specialized skull views profile mastoid air cells and surrounding bone to detect opacification, fluid, sclerosis, or bony erosion from mastoiditis, cholesteatoma, or chronic ear disease. CT is now preferred for detailed assessment.

Costs for a mastoid X‑ray vary widely by country and facility. Public health services often provide it free or at low cost; private UK clinics commonly charge about £40–£120. In the United States typical outpatient prices range $60–$300 (higher in hospitals). In India private centres often charge roughly ₹200–₹800. A doctor orders a mastoid X-ray to examine the mastoid air cells and surrounding bone for infection (mastoiditis), chronic or complicated otitis media, cholesteatoma, trauma, bone destruction or abscess. It helps detect fluid, bony erosion or sclerosis, guides surgical planning (mastoidectomy) and evaluates complications such as osteomyelitis or intracranial spread when patients have persistent ear pain, discharge, fever, or hearing loss.

Towne’s (AP axial) mastoid view positions the patient facing the image receptor with the chin tucked so the orbitomeatal line is perpendicular. The central ray is angled caudally—about 30° to the OML (or 37° to the IOML)—directed toward the foramen magnum. This projection symmetrically demonstrates the petrous ridges, posterior fossa and mastoid air cells for evaluation.

A mastoid X‑ray is very quick: the actual X‑ray exposure lasts seconds, while positioning and taking necessary views typically add 5–10 minutes. Allow about 10–20 minutes for registration and brief instructions. If done as part of a larger radiology appointment or with a young/unstable patient, total time at the clinic may extend to 15–30 minutes.

A mastoid problem usually refers to mastoiditis — inflammation or infection of the mastoid bone behind the ear. It commonly follows untreated middle ear infections and causes ear pain, swelling behind the ear, redness, fever, hearing loss and pus drainage. If untreated it can cause abscess, bone destruction or spread to the brain. Treatment involves prompt antibiotics and sometimes surgical drainage (mastoidectomy). Seek urgent care.
