X Ray Lumbo Sacral Spine Lateral View

A lateral X-ray of the lumbar spine is a side-view radiograph showing the lower back’s vertebrae, intervertebral disc spaces and alignment. It helps detect fractures, degenerative arthritis, disc height loss, spondylolisthesis, bone spurs and abnormal spinal curvature. Often done with front-back views, it’s a quick, low-dose imaging test used to guide diagnosis and treatment of back pain and spinal conditions.

The lumbosacral lateral spine is the lower-back region where the lumbar vertebrae meet the sacrum, seen from the side (lateral view). This view highlights vertebral bodies, intervertebral disc spaces, facet joints and the L5–S1 junction. Lateral assessment helps detect alignment problems, spondylolisthesis, disc degeneration, fractures and abnormal spinal curvature, guiding diagnosis, treatment and stability assessment.

A lumbosacral spine X-ray visualizes the lumbar vertebrae, sacrum and adjacent joints. It detects fractures, vertebral alignment or slippage (spondylolisthesis), degenerative changes like osteoarthritis and reduced disc height, bone lesions or infections, congenital anomalies and spinal curvature (scoliosis). It helps assess bone density and guide further imaging or treatment but cannot directly show soft tissues or detailed disc pathology.

The four standard lumbar spine radiographic views are anteroposterior (AP), lateral, and bilateral oblique (right and left obliques). The AP view shows vertebral bodies and coronal alignment; the lateral assesses disc spaces, vertebral height and sagittal alignment; oblique views visualize facet joints, pedicles and the pars interarticularis to detect spondylolysis or facet arthropathy.

A lateral view on an X-ray is an image taken with the X-ray beam passing from one side of the body to the other, producing a side‑on picture. It separates overlapping structures seen on frontal films, shows depth and alignment (for spine, chest, joints), and helps detect fractures, displacements, air‑fluid levels, and soft‑tissue detail. The patient’s side faces the detector and a side marker is used.

Wear loose, comfortable clothing and remove all metal (jewellery, belts, zippers, hearing aids) before a lumbosacral X‑ray. You may be asked to change into a gown. Inform staff if you are pregnant or suspect pregnancy. Bring prior X‑rays or reports. No fasting or medication changes are usually needed. Follow the radiographer’s instructions to stay still and hold your breath when asked.
