X Ray Lumbar Spine AP View

An AP (anteroposterior) view of the lumbar spine is an X‑ray taken with the beam passing from front to back, typically with the patient supine or standing. It shows vertebral bodies, disc spaces, pedicles and transverse processes, allowing assessment of alignment, curvature, fractures, spondylolisthesis and degenerative changes. It’s usually done with a lateral view for full evaluation.

The four standard lumbar-spine views are: anteroposterior (AP), lateral, and two oblique views (right and left). AP demonstrates vertebral bodies and disc spaces; lateral shows sagittal alignment, vertebral heights, and foramina; obliques better visualize facet joints and the pars interarticularis, aiding detection of spondylolysis or facet arthropathy. Sometimes additional spot or dynamic (flexion–extension) views are added for detail.

An X‑ray LS spine AP LAT is radiography of the lumbosacral spine taken in two projections: anteroposterior (front-to-back) and lateral (side). It evaluates vertebral alignment, fractures, degenerative changes, disc space narrowing and spondylolisthesis. The exam is quick and noninvasive; the patient stands or lies still while images are taken. It’s commonly ordered for back pain, trauma, or suspected structural problems.

Routine lumbar spine X‑ray usually uses two views — anteroposterior (AP) and lateral. Additional views (oblique to assess the pars interarticularis, and flexion/extension to evaluate instability) are added when clinically indicated. In suspected acute fracture or complex pathology, more views or cross‑sectional imaging (CT/MRI) may be recommended for better detail.

The normal anteroposterior (AP) diameter of the lumbar spinal canal at L4 and L5 is typically about 15–25 mm. Clinically, an AP diameter greater than roughly 12 mm is considered normal, 10–12 mm borderline, and less than about 10–12 mm suggests spinal canal stenosis. Measurements are taken on sagittal MRI/CT and must be correlated with symptoms.

Symptoms of a lumbar spine problem include persistent lower back pain (dull, aching, or sharp), pain radiating into buttocks or down one/both legs (sciatica), numbness, tingling, or weakness in legs or feet, stiffness and reduced mobility, and pain worsened by bending, lifting, or coughing. Severe signs—sudden weakness, numbness around the genitals, or bowel/bladder changes—need urgent medical attention.
