An X‑ray LS spine AP and lateral is radiographic imaging of the lumbosacral spine using two views: anteroposterior (AP) and lateral. It visualizes lumbar vertebrae, sacrum, intervertebral disc spaces, alignment, fractures, degenerative changes and major abnormalities. Performed standing or supine, it helps evaluate back pain, trauma, suspected instability or deformity, and guides further imaging like CT or MRI if needed.

Patient is positioned in a true lateral (standing or lateral decubitus) with hips and knees flexed to reduce lumbar lordosis, arms extended forward or elevated, and shoulders/pelvis superimposed. Use a support under the waist to keep the spine horizontal. Center the x‑ray beam perpendicular to the L3–L4 region (around the iliac crest level) to include T12 through S1, showing open disc spaces.

The four standard lumbar spine radiographic views are: anteroposterior (AP) — shows vertebral body alignment and heights; lateral — shows disc spaces, intervertebral foramina and sagittal alignment; left oblique and right oblique — optimize visualization of facet joints and the pars interarticularis to detect spondylolysis or facet pathology. Flexion/extension views may be added if instability is suspected.

A lateral view in X‑ray is a side‑to‑side radiographic projection obtained with the X‑ray beam directed from one side of the body to the other, producing a profile image. It complements frontal (AP/PA) views, allowing assessment of depth, alignment, overlap, and localization of lesions or foreign bodies. Commonly used for chest, skull, spine, and joint imaging to evaluate displacement, effusion, or anatomical relationships.

A lumbosacral (LS) spine X‑ray is a plain radiograph of the lower spine covering the lumbar vertebrae and sacrum. It evaluates bone alignment, fractures, degenerative changes, disc-space narrowing, joint arthritis and scoliosis. It's commonly used for trauma or persistent low back pain. The test is quick, noninvasive and uses low radiation, but has limited soft‑tissue detail, so CT or MRI may be recommended if needed.

Often you’ll need to remove clothing or metal objects that can interfere with imaging. For plain X‑rays (chest, abdomen), you may be asked to change into a gown and remove bras, jewelry, or belts. For localized studies, clothes can sometimes stay if they don’t obscure the area. Technologists will preserve modesty and explain pregnancy precautions when relevant.
