The oblique (typically 45°) better visualizes the scaphoid, trapezium and other carpal bones, revealing fractures not seen on PA or lateral.

Arm oblique position for X‑ray means rotating the arm or positioning the patient so the limb lies at an oblique (commonly 45°) angle to the detector. This reduces bone overlap and better demonstrates joint spaces, fractures, and cortical contours (e.g., AP oblique elbow: 45° internal or external rotation). The technologist supports and stabilizes the limb to avoid motion and obtains complementary views as needed.

X‑rays do not directly show nerves or nerve damage; they image bones and joints. However, wrist X‑rays can reveal fractures, dislocations, or arthritis that might compress a nerve (for example the median nerve). To diagnose nerve injury, clinicians use physical examination plus tests such as nerve conduction studies/EMG, ultrasound, or MRI, which can visualize nerve structure or function.

The oblique view of the hand is an X‑ray projection taken with the hand rotated about 45° between the PA/AP and lateral positions. This angle reduces bone overlap and better demonstrates metacarpals, phalanges and joint spaces, improving detection of fractures, dislocations and articular disease. Fingers are slightly separated; the PA oblique (palm down, rotated) is commonly used to optimize visualization.
