AP (anteroposterior) view means the X‑ray beam passes from the front to the back of the body onto a detector behind the patient. It’s used when patients can’t stand and may magnify structures. Lateral view directs the beam from one side to the other, providing a side profile that complements AP/PA images to show depth and help localize fractures, lesions, or fluid.

A right wrist AP and lateral X-ray are two standard radiographic views: an anteroposterior (front-to-back) image and a side (lateral) image of the right wrist. Together they show the distal radius and ulna, carpal bones, and joint alignment to detect fractures, dislocations, infection, arthritis, or bone lesions. The exam is quick, noninvasive and uses low-dose ionizing radiation.

A lateral wrist X-ray is needed to view side-to-side alignment of the carpal bones and distal radius/ulna, confirming fractures, dislocations, or subluxations that may not appear on frontal views. It identifies dorsal or volar displacement, scaphoid or distal radius fractures, carpal instability, and joint incongruity, guiding treatment decisions, immobilization, or surgical planning after trauma or persistent wrist pain.

Seat the patient with the elbow flexed 90° and the shoulder, elbow and wrist in one plane. Place the forearm in neutral with the ulnar side on the image receptor so the wrist is in a true lateral (thumb up). Extend fingers slightly, center the detector on the wrist, and direct the x‑ray beam perpendicular to the radiocarpal joint. Collimate to include distal forearm and metacarpals; confirm radius and ulna are superimposed.

AP (anteroposterior) and lateral are two separate radiographic projections. AP is a single front-to-back view; lateral is a single side-to-side view perpendicular to the AP. Each counts as one view, and together they provide orthogonal perspectives that improve localization and detection of abnormalities in chest, spine, extremities and joints. They are commonly ordered as a two‑view study.
