The scaphoid view is a specialized wrist X‑ray projection that optimizes visualization of the scaphoid by placing the wrist in ulnar deviation and angling the X‑ray beam (commonly ~10–30°) to profile the scaphoid waist. It improves detection of fractures, displacement, cortical disruption and early nonunion, but nondisplaced fractures can be occult, so CT or MRI may be needed if clinical suspicion persists.

The left scaphoid is a small boat-shaped carpal bone on the thumb (radial) side of the left wrist. It sits in the proximal row of carpal bones, articulating with the radius and neighboring carpals, and forms the floor of the anatomical snuffbox. It’s palpable just distal to the radial styloid and is commonly injured in wrist falls.

For suspected scaphoid fracture, obtain a dedicated scaphoid X‑ray series: PA (wrist), PA with 30° ulnar deviation (scaphoid view), lateral, and oblique views. If initial radiographs are negative but clinical suspicion remains, immobilize and repeat X‑rays in 10–14 days or obtain MRI/CT for early detection. CT shows bony detail; MRI detects occult fracture and vascular compromise.

The lateral view of the hand X‑ray is a side projection with the fingers aligned (digits superimposed) to display bone alignment in profile. It demonstrates phalangeal and metacarpal shaft angulation, dorsal/volar displacement, joint space relationships, carpal alignment, fractures, dislocations, and soft‑tissue swelling. Positioning: the hand is placed true lateral (ulnar side on detector) with fingers superimposed.
