X Ray Left Scaphoid AP & Lateral view

The scaphoid view is a dedicated wrist X‑ray projection to visualize the scaphoid bone more clearly. It’s obtained with the wrist in ulnar deviation and the forearm pronated, or with the X‑ray beam angled about 20–30° toward the elbow, which opens the scaphoid waist and tubercle. It helps detect scaphoid fractures that can be missed on standard wrist views.

The left scaphoid is a small, boat-shaped carpal bone on the thumb (radial) side of the left wrist. It links the two rows of wrist bones, helps stabilize wrist motion, and transmits load across the joint. Scaphoid fractures are common after falls onto an outstretched hand and may heal slowly due to limited blood supply to the proximal pole, risking nonunion or avascular necrosis.

The lateral view of the hand X-ray is a side-profile image taken with the hand positioned sideways to show bones and joints in the sagittal plane. It displays phalanges, metacarpals and carpal alignment, joint spacing, and soft-tissue contours to detect fractures, dislocations, angulation, or foreign bodies. It complements AP and oblique views for complete assessment and surgical planning.

The standard best views for a wrist X‑ray are a posteroanterior (PA) and a true lateral. An oblique view is commonly added to visualize joint spaces and carpal alignment. For suspected scaphoid fractures, a dedicated scaphoid view (PA with ulnar deviation or specific angled projection) improves detection. At minimum, obtain PA and lateral; add views as clinically indicated.

Scaphoid X‑rays are indicated at any age when a scaphoid fracture is suspected after wrist trauma, but fractures are most common in adolescents and young adults (typically about 15–40 years). If clinical signs (snuffbox tenderness) appear with a normal initial film, immobilize and repeat X‑rays or obtain advanced imaging after 10–14 days, especially in younger patients with incomplete ossification.

The scaphoid is a small carpal bone that bridges the proximal and distal rows, maintaining wrist alignment and enabling smooth motion and load transfer. Its blood supply is fragile, so fractures—often from a fall on an outstretched hand—can lead to poor healing, nonunion, avascular necrosis, and later arthritis, making early diagnosis and appropriate treatment crucial.
